ISA/IEC 62443 · OT Security
Secure your plant without stopping production
Practical ISA/IEC 62443 consulting for energy, oil and gas, utilities and manufacturing: from OT asset inventory and risk assessment to zones, conduits and a working OT cybersecurity programme.
Contain the threat, keep the plant running
Zones and conduits stop threats from reaching control systems, while approved data keeps moving.
OT security is not IT security moved to the plant floor. It starts with the process, the safety case and the people who run it.
Dr. Sanjay Vaid, Invocore
Why OT security needs its own approach
Plants run on PLCs, DCS, SCADA, RTUs, HMIs and historians that control real equipment in real time. As IT and OT networks connect, these systems face attacks that can stop production, damage equipment and put people at risk. ISA/IEC 62443 is the international series of standards for securing industrial automation and control systems, and it is built around zones, conduits and defined security levels.
The challenge
Why this matters now
For decades, industrial control systems were protected by isolation. Controllers, SCADA servers and engineering workstations sat on their own networks, maintained by engineers whose first concern was safety and uptime. That isolation has quietly disappeared. Remote access for vendors, links to ERP and historians, cloud analytics and connected field devices have turned the plant floor into part of the wider network.
The consequences of an OT incident are physical: a stopped line, a damaged turbine, a release, a safety event. Yet many organisations still lack a basic picture of what is connected, which connections matter and who owns the risk. ISA/IEC 62443 gives a common language for engineers, security teams, integrators and suppliers to close that gap in a structured, defensible way.
Converging networks
IT and OT are now connected through remote access, historians and cloud platforms, opening new paths into control systems.
Customer and regulator expectations
Operators, OEM customers and insurers increasingly ask suppliers and plants to demonstrate OT security against recognised standards.
Ageing installed base
Many plants run controllers and operating systems that cannot simply be patched, so segmentation and compensating controls matter more than ever.
Quick self-check
How ready are you?
Answer four questions leaders ask us. Your result appears instantly; nothing is stored or sent.
Do we know every controller, server and connection on our plant network?
Could an incident on the corporate network reach our control systems?
Which systems need the highest security level, and why?
Can we show customers and regulators a credible OT security programme?
What we deliver
Capabilities
OT asset inventory
A clear register of controllers, servers, network devices and connections across your sites.
Risk assessment (62443-3-2)
Identify threats, consequences and the target security level for each part of the system.
Zones and conduits
Segment the network into zones and control every connection between them with firewalls and a DMZ.
OT security policy and programme
Policies, roles and procedures for an asset-owner security programme aligned to 62443-2-1.
System requirements (62443-3-3)
Map technical controls to the security levels your risk assessment calls for.
Internal audit and readiness
Independent gap assessment and internal audit before customer audits or certification.

Selected
Enterprise IT
Business networks and systems such as ERP and email. Under 62443 they sit outside the control zones and connect only through the DMZ.
Industrial DMZ
A buffer zone between IT and OT. Firewalls, jump hosts and data replicas mean no direct traffic passes between business and control networks.
Operations
Site-level systems such as historians, MES and patch servers that collect data and manage production.
Supervisory
SCADA servers, HMIs and engineering workstations that monitor and command the process. A frequent target, so access is tightly controlled.
Control
PLCs, DCS controllers and RTUs that run the process logic in real time. Changes here need strict authorisation.
Field devices
Sensors, actuators and drives that measure and act on the physical process. Their integrity is essential to safety.

Why Invocore
What sets us apart
Senior, practitioner-led advice that holds up in front of auditors, boards and customers.
Engineering-first
We start from the process, the safety case and plant operations, not from an IT checklist.
Auditor's eye
Led by an experienced lead auditor, so every control is designed to be evidenced and verified.
Consult and train
The same team can train your engineers, so the programme keeps running after we leave.

Frequently asked questions
Is ISA/IEC 62443 only for large plants?
No. The series scales from a single production line to multi-site operations. We size the assessment to your systems.
Will the work disrupt production?
Assessments are planned with operations teams and use passive information gathering wherever possible.
Can you train our engineers as well?
Yes. We run ISA/IEC 62443 OT security courses, in public batches or in-house for your teams.
Which parts of 62443 do you cover?
Mainly 62443-2-1 (asset-owner programme), 62443-3-2 (risk assessment) and 62443-3-3 (system requirements), with guidance on 62443-4-1 and 4-2 for product suppliers.
